New Physician-in-Chief

Dr. Ilan Fischler, Physician in Chief
(Whitby, ON) October 4, 2016 – Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences (Ontario Shores) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr.Ilan Fischler to the role of Physician-in-Chief.  Dr. Fischler joined Ontario Shores in 2007and is currently the Medical Director, Clinical Informatics.  During his tenure he has made many significant contributions to both his patients and the organization.

“The Board is pleased to welcome Dr. Fischler to the role of Physician-in-Chief,” says Barbara Cooney, Chair, Board of Directors. “He brings extensive expertise both as a clinician and physician leader.  He is innovative, passionate about how the application of technology can advance the mental health care system and he is dedicated to providing recovery-oriented care to the communities we serve.”

In addition to his role as Medical Director, Dr. Fischler was the Physician Champion for the implementation of the hospital’s fully integrated Electronic Medical Record.  He has provided leadership at the provincial level in the development of quality standards for mental health that will be applied across the system.  He also leads the implementation of various technology-based applications including Big White Wall, an online support community for people feeling anxious or depressed, or having trouble coping with other mental health-related issues.

Dr Fischler is an active researcher and educator who has done numerous presentations and has publications in the areas of e-health, dementia and the implementation of Clinical Practice Guidelines.  He has received numerous individual and team awards for his clinical achievements and innovative leadership including the 2015 Clinical Leadership Award from Canada Health Infoway and COACH: Canada’s Health Informatics Association.

Dr. Fischler is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto and is a Geriatric Psychiatrist at North York General Hospital.

Dr. Fischler starts his new role effective November 1.
