February 13, 2015

TORONTO – For the first time the Schizophrenia Society of Ontario’s (SSO) annual Peace of Minds Yogathon will take place in Whitby in a new partnership with Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences. Funds raised from the event will support SSO’s mandate to improve the lives of people living with schizophrenia through counselling, education and research as well as the programs, services and research at Ontario Shores.

For the first time the Schizophrenia Society of Ontario’s (SSO) annual Peace of Minds Yogathon will take place in Whitby in a new partnership with Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences. Funds raised from the event will support SSO’s mandate to improve the lives of people living with schizophrenia through counselling, education and research as well as the programs, services and research at Ontario Shores.

"We are very happy to be partnering with Ontario Shores on this year’s Yogathon," said Mary Alberti, CEO of SSO. "Ontario Shores is a leader in the treatment of mental health issues so this was a perfect opportunity to include a healthcare partner while allowing the Yogathon to grow and reach a wider audience."

At this event, participants can attend one class, take part in an entire day of yoga or fundraise through pledges. The Yogathon is an event that offers many different styles at all skill levels and brings people together through physical activity while highlighting the important link between yoga and mental health.

"Ontario Shores is pleased to be a part of this year’s Peace of Mind Yogathon," said Karim Mamdani, President and CEO of Ontario Shores. "This is a wonderful event that will support services for people with mental illness and also welcomes the community to visit our centre and take part in what will be an amazing day."

The new partnership was also a great opportunity to engage local yoga studios and teachers in raising funds and awareness in support of mental health.

Nancy Edwards from Dharana Yoga in Whitby is teaching at the Yogathon for the first time after hearing about the event from a student. "I’m excited that the Yogathon is in Whitby this year allowing me to take part," she says. "Mental illness touches so many families and I hope we can work to remove the stigma that seems to be associated with it."

The Peace of Minds Yogathon will be held at Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences,

700 Gordon Street in Whitby on Saturday February 28, 2015 from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
