Strong Support for Mental Illness Awareness Walk/Run at Ontario Shores

September 28, 2015

Community support for mental illness awareness and stigma reduction was on display at the recent Walk/Run benefitting the patients at Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences (Ontario Shores). Close to 200 participants of all ages took time to cover the one to five kilometre course on the waterfront property, raising awareness and funds to support mental illness programs and services.

The idea of the District A16 Lions Club, the Walk/Run for Happiness on Sunday, September 27, saw families, politicians and key community leaders demonstrating strong support for the cause. Honourary chairs of the event included Regional Chair and CEO, Roger Anderson and Mayor of Whitby, Don Mitchell, who were in attendance.

“The annual Lions Walk/Run for Happiness allows us to partner with our community to fund programs and services which fill a key need in today’s society,” says Linda Henry, Chief Executive Officer at Ontario Shores Foundation. “It’s great to see so many families and individuals show their support and help raise awareness about mental health in our community.”

Providing a huge boost to the participants’ mental health, the event featured lunch, live music from local talent, face painting, and registered massage therapists to soothe participants.

This year’s event raised over $35,000 which will be used to help fund much needed programs and services offered by Ontario Shores, where patients experience an environment built on recovery, compassion and hope.

In Canada, one in five people experiences a mental illness, which not only affects the individual but impacts families, friends, co-workers and communities. Ontario Shores is working to highlight the importance of mentally healthy communities and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health.
