Gift to Ontario Shores to Support Families in Need

December 12, 2013

(Whitby, ON) – The realization a family member is struggling with mental illness can often times overwhelm a family.  Families need support, and Ontario Shores’ Family Resource Centre received an $80,000 boost in of support for families during their time of need.

Ontario Shores Foundation for Mental Health (Ontario Shores Foundation) and Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences (Ontario Shores)  celebrated a generous gift from the Volunteer Association at Ontario Shores. This donation represents an understanding and belief in the value and support the Family Resource Centre can play in the lives of families seeking help and comfort to better understand the mental illness of a loved one.

“This kind and significant donation will aid in establishing and preparing technology that will support families unable to come to our facility to connect with our staff and volunteers at the Family Resource Centre.  The gift will also provide programming, support and the unique offering of system navigation from family members with lived experiences to families and friends seeking support,” says Karim Mamdani, President and CEO of Ontario Shores.

“Our families will know that they are not alone, that help and hope can be found here at Ontario Shores with other families on the same journey.  It will be a place where questions can be answered, problems shared and solutions offered when families feel lost, overwhelmed and confused. The Family Resource Centre offers both information and emotional support and we are glad to be able to help,” says Neil Hannam, Executive Director of Ontario Shores Foundation.

The donation was given to Ontario Shores’ Family Resource Centre today at a ceremony to honour and recognize the Volunteer Association for their generous gift.

“The Volunteer Association at Ontario Shores has a long, rich tradition of supporting volunteers from the community.  We have assisted Ontario Shores for almost 50 years in reaching volunteers from the community and know our gift to  the Family Resource Centre will be a valuable contribution to support family, friends, the community and individuals struggling with mental illness,” says Pat Freeborn, President of the Volunteer Association.

The Family Resource Centre is a space where families and friends can access support and information resources from a healthcare team to support family members with mental illness.  It is also a space where families come together to support each other and participate in education to better aid one another in the recovery process of their loved one.
