Families play an important role in their loved one’s journey of recovery.  But often the significant emotional and practical problems experienced by the relatives of individuals with a mental illness are not addressed. The impact of mental illness on families and loved ones can be overwhelming and long lasting.

Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences (Ontario Shores) is pleased to open our new Family Resource Centre (FRC).  The Family Resource Centre is a space where families and friends can access support from a healthcare team and information resources to support family members with mental illness.  The FRC is also a space where families come together to support each other and participate in education to better aid one another in the recovery process of their loved one.

Christine Holland is familiar with the journey of recovery.  “Families provide ongoing support and care for their loved ones.  This journey is difficult and families need access to accurate and timely information, support and education,” says Holland both a member of Ontario Shores Family Council and an active force behind the creation of the Family Resource Centre.

“I am involved with the Family Resource Centre in honour of my family and the hundreds of other families I met in the last 13 years. I know families are out there and in need of support just like mine was when two of our children were diagnosed with a mental illness,” says Holland.

“At Ontario Shores, we have identified the pivotal role of loved ones and have integrated them into the recovery process. We believe the opening of our new Family Resource Centre will help manage the challenges of this journey for families and enhance their quality of life,” explains Karim Mamdani, President and CEO at Ontario Shores.

“Our Family Resource Centre is a dedicated, therapeutic space for loved ones to share knowledge, access resources and connect with other families for support and encouragement.  We welcome individuals, families and the community to learn and understand more about the mental illness of a loved one with the support provided by our staff and newly dedicated family space,” says Mamdani.

Ontario Shores opened the new Family Resource Centre with the help of Christine Elliott, MPP for Whitby – Oshawa who is also the honourary chair of the Family Resource Centre.  Ms. Elliott spoke of her support for the Family Resource Centre and agreed that well-supported family caregivers can facilitate the recovery of their ill relatives and increase their quality of life.

Families make communities.  Families also care for individuals within communities.  Ontario Shores will support families and friends as they continue to support our communities’ most vulnerable members.

The Family Resource Centre is located at Ontario Shores and is open five days and one evening weekly.  For more information, contact Ontario Shores Family Resource Centre at 905.430.4055 ext.6970.
