May 04, 2012
George Chuvalo, the greatest Canadian heavyweight champion of all time, will share his story of strength and courage at the fifth
George ChuvaloGeorge Chuvalo
annual Mental Health Speaker Series hosted by Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences (Ontario Shores), Canadian Mental Health Association Durham (CMHA Durham), Durham Mental Health Services and Lakeridge Health and Pinewood Services for Mental Health.

Noted for his toughness, Chuvalo fought all the greats and no one – not Joe Frazier, George Foreman or even Muhammad Ali – ever knocked him down.

In an interview with local TV personality Dan Carter, Chuvalo’s keynote presentation will reflect on his life outside the ring, where life dealt him several crushing body blows: he lost three sons to drug addiction and his wife to suicide. Just like in the ring, Chuvalo has refused to go down by using his story of personal pain to help others.

In addition to the evening presentation, general mental health sessions will take place throughout the day, such as:
  • Mental Health in the Workplace: Heather Bickle - CMHA Durham
  • Half Hour to Health: Dr. Michael Coulas - Optimal Life Chiropractic
  • Quick and Healthy Food Fixes: Alex Khan - Ontario Shores
  • Brain Fitness for Mental Health: Jill Hewlett - Brain Works Global
  • Creating a Great Family Life: CJ Calvert - Author of Living an Exceptional Life

When: Thursday, May 10, 2012
