(Whitby, ON) - On October 14, 2012, over one hundred and fifty dog lovers and over 50 dogs from Durham Region came together to help support the Paws for Mental Health fundraiser at Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences (Ontario Shores).

Paws for Mental Health showcased the therapeutic benefits and tremendous joys that dogs bring to our lives, offering hope and support for patients suffering with mental illnesses and to benefit employee wellness at Ontario Shores.

The therapeutic benefits were evident in events such as the Ultimate K9’s from SuperDog Central and Trick Dog Demos with Pawzazz helping to please and bring widespread smiles to the crowd.

Participants, onlookers, vendors and dogs united together and took part in numerous events such as the “Paws-a-Thon” pledge walk, free nail clipping, contests including best dog trick, dog that looks most like their owner, biggest dog, smallest dog, waggiest tail, “Pawcasso” dog art, doggie Olympics, “ask a vet” and demonstrations. A pair of tickets were also given away to see “The Dog Whisperer” Caesar Milan in November in Oshawa.

First-time visitor to Ontario Shores and local Whitby resident Kourtney Harrison, was pleased to contribute to the fundraiser, raffles and offer her support for mental health. “I have a love for pets and I am also an advocate of mental health awareness. Supporting a progressive cause towards reducing mental health stigma is important to me,” says Harrison.

Julie Rennie, Manager of Major Gifts at Ontario Shores Foundation shared how much she enjoyed the event. “Ontario Shores Foundation is extremely pleased to be part of the Inaugural ‘Paws for Mental Health’ fundraising event.  Money raised will help support the lives of patients and wellness initiatives for staff at Ontario Shores.  The event was a huge success and a fantastic way for our patients, staff and the public to gather and enjoy a day of outdoor fun with their dogs” says Rennie.
