Ontario Shores Salutes the Work of the Select Committee on Mental Health and Addictions

August 27, 2010

Yesterday marked an important day in mental health care with the release of the Select Committee’s report, Navigating the Journey to Wellness: The Comprehensive Mental Health and Addictions Action Plan for Ontarians. Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences (Ontario Shores) applauds the depth of work, extensive consultation and vision for the future of mental health care in the province.

The creation of a new umbrella agency, Mental Health and Addictions Ontario is one of the 23 recommendations in the report.

“Ontario Shores supports the development of a provincial coordinating organization with regional leads to design, manage and ensure consistent service delivery throughout the province,” says Dr. Eric Fonberg, Chair, Board of Directors, Ontario Shores. “This comprehensive approach offers the opportunity for standardized care, equitable access and improved patient outcomes.”

Other recommendations include a core basket of treatment services, community services and supports, education, affordable housing and improvements to the justice system.

“The report and its recommendations signal a new era of recovery and hope for individuals and families affected by mental illness,” says Glenna Raymond, President and CEO of Ontario Shores. “Ontario Shores looks forward to working with government, partners and stakeholders to make this vision a reality and to advance the mental health care system for all Ontarians.”
