Metabolic and Weight Management Clinic Expands through Generous Donation

July 20, 2010

Pfizer Canada Inc. (Pfizer) donated $10,000 to Ontario Shores Foundation for Mental Health (Ontario Shores Foundation) for the Metabolic and Weight Management Clinic (MWM Clinic) at Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences (Ontario Shores). There is a well documented link between mental illness and an increased risk of physical health problems such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Through this generous donation, the Clinic will be able to expand its services and develop new self management modules to help people with mental illness manage their physical health problems.

“Ontario Shores Foundation is honoured to receive such a generous donation from Pfizer Canada,” says Jennifer Clark, Executive Director, Ontario Shores Foundation. “Pfizer shares our dedication to help communities receive better care and we look forward to future collaborations to expand treatment and services for our patients.”

The MWM Clinic’s goal is to provide patients with accessible multidisciplinary services, support and education. Services include health assessments and screening, motivational counselling, individualized dietary and physical activity programming and medical and nursing management.

In 2009, the MWM Clinic received the prestigious Canadian College of Health Service Executives (CCHSE) 3M Health Care Quality Team Award. This national award recognizes innovation, quality and team leadership, and Ontario Shores was recognized for identifying a significant gap in mental health patient care.

“Pfizer Canada is pleased to support the innovative Metabolic and Weight Management Clinic at Ontario Shores,” says David Tonna, Account Manager, Health Networks with Pfizer Canada Inc. “Pfizer welcomes opportunities to partner with organizations in the community like Ontario Shores to help patients improve their metabolic and cardiovascular health.”

The MWM Clinic will develop new self management modules including metabolic and cardiovascular education, medication, smoking cessation and chronic disease management.

“This donation is a major step forward for the Metabolic and Weight Management Clinic,” says Jason Moores, Clinic nurse-practitioner. “We believe in treating the whole person and through this support we can expand services, increase education and improve access to services.”
