Whitby Mental Health Centre Introduces New Recovery Model

March 30, 2009
Empowerment, hope, recovery, collaboration, teamwork and inspiration will be some of the words used to describe WMHC’s (WMHC) new recovery-oriented model of care being introduced across the organization.

Recovery and Rediscover – Shared Journey builds on our current care model through a holistic patient centred approach. It combines medical, rehabilitation and psychological perspectives in the treatment of mental illness. The Shared Journey promotes inclusion and empowerment of patients and treatment options that are tailored to the individual needs of patients.

Under this model, patients play an active role in identifying their wellness goals in an environment that values strengths, autonomy and resilience. Staff will work in collaboration with patients, families, other healthcare providers and the community to ensure patients reach their optimal recovery.

“The Shared Journey represents an exciting transformation for our organization as it brings our vision to life. Recovering Best Health, Nurturing Hope and Inspiring Discovery will be put into practice every day,” says Glenna Raymond, President and CEO. The Shared Journey provides a wonderful opportunity to build the pathway for mental health care that delivers new options, philosophies and innovative treatment models for our patients and the communities we serve.”

Over 100 staff have already graduated from the Shared Journey education. They have learned about the Collaborative Recovery Model, how to strengthen therapeutic alliances and the importance of promoting wellness through meaningful relationships. “Shared Journey education was a great opportunity for staff to look at how they practice, strengthen partnerships with patients and provide greater support for each other,” says Jennifer Huron, Registered Nurse with WMHC.

The Shared Journey will develop and sustain a culture of care for both patients and staff that incorporate the philosophies of pride, mentoring, respect, integrity, caring and teamwork. Over the next 18 months, all staff and patients will participate in the Shared Journey education..
