What is Involved in Being a Volunteer?

Your job as a volunteer is to be yourself and to share some of your time with others who need your understanding and compassion. It is important that you are willing to accept patients as equals as well as training and supervision from staff. Partnership with staff is an important part of being a volunteer.

What makes a great volunteer?

  • Kindness and compassion and the ability to treat all individuals with respect and dignity
  • An interest in working in and learning more about mental health facilities
  • Good listening and communication skills
  • Well-motivated, friendly and interested in people
  • Reliable and punctual
  • A commitment to the Mission and Values of Ontario Shores
  • The ability to fulfill the time commitment of the volunteer role

Regular Schedule

Due to the nature of our work at Ontario Shores the minimum age to volunteer in the regular program is 18 and the minimum commitment is one two-hour shift per week for one year (4 hours for the research placement). Recruitment for these placements is ongoing, and there is no deadline to apply.

Volunteers must be available on the same day each week as this provides consistency for patients, family members and staff. There are no flexible or rotating shifts. It is very important to consider which days of the week will work for you to avoid conflicting responsibilities.

Summer Student Schedule

We have a summer student volunteer program for full or part-time college and university students (parental/guardian consent required for students under 18 years of age). The minimum commitment is two hours per week throughout June, July and August.

‚ÄčOur 2019 summer program is now OPEN and we are accepting applications until May 17, 2019. Please follow the link below to find the process and documents required to qualify for an interview.
