The gymnasium is equipped for basketball, floor hockey, volleyball, badminton and other activities. There is also a conditioning room equipped with a multi-station machine, free weights, treadmills, elliptical training machines and a recumbent stationary bicycle.

Family Members

Family members will have to sign a general release and successfully complete a ParQ health form to be eligible to access the gymnasium and conditioning room.

  1. Prior to a family member’s participation in the designated Central Recreation activities (games room, gymnasium, and conditioning room) with their loved one, the following steps in sequence must be taken:
  2. The family member and patient must have a discussion about the prospect of the family member’s participation in the patient’s recovery by engaging in Central Recreation activities, and jointly communicate this request to one of the treatment team members.
  3. The treatment team will incorporate the family member’s participation in the patient’s recovery treatment plan, and coordinate an initial appointment date/time between the family member, patient and Central Recreation.
  4. To promote the family member’s health and wellness, the family member’s initial appointment in Central Recreation will include: physical readiness screening, signing a General Release and orientation to the games room, gymnasium and conditioning room.
  5. If the family member passes the initial physical readiness screening, they may start engaging in activities in the gymnasium and conditioning room with their loved one at the time of the initial appointment, providing time permits.*
  6. For subsequent visits, the family member must check in with unit staff to request attendance to the Central Recreation area with the patient. The unit staff must verify there is no change in the patient’s clinical condition which would prevent the patient from participating safely in activities. The staff will then contact Central Recreation to schedule an appointment during the designated access times.
  7. As long as the family member has attended an initial appointment with Central Recreation, signed a General Release and participated in the orientation, they are welcome to use the games room with the patient regardless of whether the family member has passed the physical readiness screening.

* If the family member does not pass the initial physical readiness screening, Central Recreation staff will provide a secondary physical readiness screening form which must be completed by the family member and their physician. Once medical clearance is provided by their physician, the family member must call Central Recreation to schedule an appointment. At the appointment, the Therapeutic Recreationist will review the medical clearance form with the family member and determine how their health and wellness needs can best be promoted before being permitted to access the gymnasium and conditioning room.
