The
Assessment and Reintegration Program at Ontario Shores includes five inpatient units and an interprofessional treatment team that provide care for adults faced with mental illness. Electives in this program can be tailored to students’
learning needs. Students will be working
in a patient-focused interprofessional setting, which follows the recovery
model.
Electives can be of varying lengths and
foci. Some examples, ranging from one to six
months include:
- Rapid Assessment Service: On the five-bed Rapid Assessment Unit,
students will have the opportunity to assess patients with chronic mental
illness who are in crisis. The focus
on this unit is formulation and assessment, addressing bio-psycho-social
factors as they contribute to the decompensation of illness and readmission to
hospital. Students will participate in
developing targeted treatment and management plans to assist patients in returning
successfully to the community. Students will have regular opportunities to
be involved with outpatient treatment teams and family members to assist with the
transition.
- Assessment and Stabilization Unit: This 27-bed inpatient unit for clients with a wide range of
psychiatric presentations requiring diagnostic clarification and medication
reviews. Students will have the
opportunity to review various modalities of treatment for individuals with
complex presentations, predominantly with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and
schizoaffective disorder, who are refractory to treatment.
- The Skills, Training, and Education Program, is an inpatient setting
for young adults suffering from psychotic disorders, requiring both stabilization
and development of various life skills to assist with recovery. Students will assist patients in learning to
recognize and manage symptoms, address confounding factors such as substance
use, and provide assistance with education and employment. There will be a focus on assessment and
diagnosis of psychotic disorders, and developing multifactorial treatment
plans.
