Thank you for your interest in pursing a learning opportunity at Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences (Ontario Shores). Ontario Shores is one of four specialized psychiatric hospitals in Ontario, Canada, providing exemplary care, support, and advocacy for those whose lives are impacted by mental illness.

Preparing for your rotation

  • COVID 19 Assessment at the entrance.  You will be screened for COVID 19 daily upon arrival at the Main Entrance.  Masks will be provided each day. 
  • A Canadian criminal background check (CPIC) and Vulnerable Sector Screen (VSS) within the last 12 months. 
  • Immunization Requirements: 
    • Hepatitis B (laboratory evidence of immune status) 
    • Proof of immune status for Measles, Mumps, Rubella*, and Chickenpox (Varicella), which is demonstrated by providing documentation of either: 
    • Two doses of either the MMR and or varicella-containing vaccine on, or after the first birthday with doses given at least four weeks apart, OR 
    • Laboratory evidence of immunity 
          *Note- for Rubella ONLY, documentation of ONE Rubella-containing vaccine is acceptable 
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis (Tdap) or Td vaccine within the past 10 years 
    • Tuberculin Skin Test (TST): 
      • A baseline documented two-Step Tuberculosis skin test (TST) 8 weeks prior to your start date. Unless you have: 
        • Documented results of a prior two step skin test OR 
        • Documentation of a negative TST within the last 12 months; In which case a single-step test must be given within 8 weeks of start date
    • Positive TST 
      • HCWs who are found to be TST positive do not require a TB skin test, but must have been assessed by your attending medical practitioner AND have completed a recent chest x-ray. 
      • HCW with previously positive TB skin tests are attesting that you are free from signs or symptoms of active TB disease
  • You will be sent a link (either by your school or the coordinators at Ontario Shores) to complete mandatory training prior to your placement.  Trainings include:

    • Infection Control 
    • Privacy and Information 
    • SMG for Students 
    • Therapeutic Relationships 
    • Workplace Violence

  • Please connect with your supervisor/preceptor to arrange where to meet after your orientation.

Mid-placement check-in

Mid way through your placement, you will be contacted by a member of the Academics team to arrange a mid-placement check-in.  This will be an opportunity to discuss your placement to let us know of any questions or concerns.

On your last day

  • Exit interview
  • Return of hospital property (ie. ID badge, keys etc.)
  • Submit rotation and supervision evaluations to coordinators
